The Igreja Matriz de Serzedo began its story in the medieval era. The first documented mention of this locality dates back to 1014. By 1220, records from King Afonso II’s inquiries refer to Serzedo as “Sancti Michaelis de Cerzedo.” The “Ecclesia de Cerzedo” is referenced in 1258. It marks the church’s presence in the community. In 1321, the Igreja de São Miguel de Serzedo was taxed at one hundred and sixty-five libras.
In 1726, the Igreja de São Miguel de Serzedo became an abbey. It fell under the jurisdiction of the Pombeiro monastery. Father Manuel da Sylva de Azevedo was its abbot.
