Beneath the Essen sky, the Dortmannhof stands as a testament to time. It whispers stories of farmers and families. This listed building in Essen-Katernberg is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a journey back to the 18th century.

The Dortmannhof represents a specific architectural style. It is a Hallenhaus. This design was common in the Essen region. Family living spaces and barn were combined. They were all under one roof in a compact structure.

Once upon a time, farmers lived and worked here. Today, the Dortmannhof houses a family of musicians. Their unique needs have shaped the building’s modern transformation.

In the middle of the barn, an eleven-meter-high music studio was added. It stands as a testament to the family’s artistic pursuits. The eastern barn was converted into a guesthouse. It has a separate entrance. The western barn now houses a large bathroom.

Step inside and notice the high, narrow rooms. Daylight streams through the large, north-facing windows. These windows were originally designed to ventilate hay.

The Dortmannhof has several entrances and internal connections. These features once aided agricultural activities. Today, they allow family life, creativity, and work to coexist. The spirit of collaboration remains strong here.

The new internal additions were built as oversized, habitable furniture. These elements can be removed. The building’s historical appearance can be restored at any time. This clever design meets German monument protection laws. It allows historic buildings to adapt for modern use.

Architect Sigurd Larsen’s vision shines. He demonstrates that minor changes can transform unconventional spaces. These spaces then fit today’s requirements. The Dortmannhof isn’t just a building. It is a living piece of history. It adapts and evolves while honoring its past. It is a place where music, family, and heritage intertwine. It is a jewel of Essen-Katernberg.

The Dortmannhof completed in 1791 has a size of 350 m2. In 2020, the internal extension was completed.
