The Villa Pusterla – Crivelli, a magnificent mansion in Mombello, sits serenely on a hill overlooking the valley. It stands as a testament to a rich and varied history, one that encompasses tales of noble families, powerful rulers, and even a period as a psychiatric hospital.

The villa’s origins date back to the 14th century when the Pusterla family, a prominent Milanese clan, built it as a suburban residence. Over the centuries, it passed from one distinguished family to another, evolving with each new era. The Carcano family held it for a time, then it was acquired by the Arconati family. Anna Visconti, a relative of Saint Charles Borromeo, played a significant role in transforming the villa into a permanent residence. She used her influential connections to connect the villa with prominent figures across the region.

The villa’s true grandeur arrived with the Crivelli family, who purchased it in 1719. Senator Giuseppe Angelo Crivelli made it a bustling social and political hub, hosting luminaries like Ferdinand IV, King of the Two Sicilies, and even Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon chose the villa as his headquarters in 1797, favouring it over the more established Royal Villa of Monza. His mother, Maria Letizia, and his sisters Carolina, Elisa, and Paolina, also resided here, with Paolina’s wedding to General Leclerc taking place in the on-site oratory.

After a period of decline and several changes of ownership, the Province of Milan acquired the villa in 1863. For over a century, starting in 1865, it served as a psychiatric hospital, known as the Mombello Asylum. The villa then fell into disrepair until 1976, when the Luigi Castiglioni State Technical Agricultural Institute took over part of it.

The villa boasts an impressive Italian garden, which was originally created by the Crivelli family. It features fountains, water displays, and a remarkable terrace with sweeping views of the valley. The villa itself is a captivating example of Lombard architecture, showcasing influences from its various historical eras. Within its walls are remnants of medieval architecture, remnants of Renaissance modifications made by the Arconati family, and Baroque additions made during the Crivelli ownership.

Today, Villa Pusterla – Crivelli stands as a fascinating reminder of the past. It is a place where history whispers through its walls and where the echoes of those who once roamed its halls can still be felt. It offers a glimpse into the lives of the noble families, the powerful rulers, and even the asylum patients who all called this remarkable place home.
