Founded in 1893 TMI Episcopal has a rich history. It began as the West Texas School for Boys. The school’s founder James Steptoe Johnston was a fascinating man. A Mississippian planter he fought in twelve Civil War battles. He even spent time as a prisoner of war on Johnson’s Island in Lake Erie. Imagine his journey from the battlefields to establishing this prestigious institution.

Johnston’s vision was unique for Southern boarding schools. He incorporated full-fledged military discipline into the curriculum. This was unusual at the time. This military tradition continues today although it’s optional. The school’s name changed several times. It was once known as West Texas Military Academy. Then it became the Texas Military Institute. In 2017 under Headmaster Scott J Brown it became TMI Episcopal.

The school’s location has also evolved. It started on Government Hill near Fort Sam Houston. Then it moved to Alamo Heights. The current campus built in 1989 is in Northwest San Antonio. It’s a modern building largely constructed of local limestone. A key feature of the campus is All Saints’ Chapel. This 500-seat modern chapel hosts daily services. It’s been recognized for its architectural excellence. The chapel organ is a notable feature too a two-manual 18-voice Schoenstein & Co opus.

TMI Episcopal isn’t just about academics. Its athletic program boasts 19 interscholastic sports. The school’s Corps of Cadets program is affiliated with the US Army JROTC. The Panther Battalion has been an Honor Unit with Distinction for over a decade. This high ranking allows cadets to apply to US service academies without needing congressional recommendations.
