Initially, the Greek Orthodox Community met in a small building. It was located on Johnson and Lawrence Streets. These early members yearned for a permanent place to worship. They collected donations from across the United States. Contributions ranged from pennies to hundreds of dollars. Their efforts allowed them to acquire this property on Schermerhorn Street. On April 16 1916 the cornerstone was laid marking the beginning of their dream.

The Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral has expanded over the years. The church building was expanded in 1946. It was renovated and rededicated again in 1960. These renovations reflect the community’s growth and dedication. In June 1966 the church achieved a significant milestone. It became Brooklyn’s Cathedral.

This cathedral has become the center of Hellenism in Brooklyn. Dignitaries from Greece Cyprus and the United States often visit. Its valuable icons some created by Constantinos Yioussis enhance its beauty.

The Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral is more than a church. It is also an educational center. The A. Fantis Parochial School is right behind the church. It was established in 1963 fifty years after the church. The school strengthens the Greek identity of its students. The school was named after Argyrios Fantis a primary benefactor.

Many clergymen have guided the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Father Evagoras Constantinides is the current Dean. He assumed the role in late 2018. He also serves as the Spiritual Leader and Religion Department Chair.

The Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral faced adversity in 1991. A fire damaged the building. However the community rallied. They repaired and restored the cathedral. This resilience demonstrates their commitment to preserving their heritage.
