From atop Vaattunkivaara näkötorni, the world stretches out before you. Have you ever seen a 450-year-old tree? Well, down below, on Vaattunkivaara Hill, ancient pines stand sentinel, some over four and a half centuries old. The Vaattunkivaara Nature Trail, starting near Vikaköngäs, winds through this rocky, hilltop forest. It’s a 3.9 km loop, rated at a medium difficulty. The climb to the Vaattunkivaara näkötorni is about 80 meters. The reward? Breathtaking views from this observation tower. On a clear day, the rugged hills, open string bogs, and the Raudanjoki river with its rapids, unfurl beneath your gaze. The trail itself is a mix of gravel paths and duckboards, making it accessible in most conditions. But watch your step. The hilltop can be slippery after rain. Sturdy footwear is definitely recommended. If you’re here in winter, try snowshoeing along the same route. It’s a different kind of magic, with the landscape draped in white.
