Isn’t it amazing that this station was designed to withstand snow? Welcome to the Old KL Train Station. This iconic building has stood here since 1910. It is a testament to Kuala Lumpur’s rich history. The Old KL Train Station is not just a building. It is a symbol of a bygone era.

Construction of the Old KL Train Station started in 1910. It was fully completed in 1917. The station replaced an older one on the same site. Before this station, two others served Kuala Lumpur. The first was the Resident Station. The second was the Sultan Street Station.

The Old KL Train Station became Kuala Lumpur’s main railway hub. It served the Federated Malay States Railways. Later, it served Keretapi Tanah Melayu. This lasted until Kuala Lumpur Sentral took over much of its role in 2001.

Look closely at the architecture of the Old KL Train Station. Notice the blend of Eastern and Western designs. Arthur Benison Hubback designed this station. He was a British Architectural Assistant. He used Anglo-Asian architecture. You can see it in the Neo-Moorish style. This style was popular at the time. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Jamek Mosque share this style.

The iron roof of the Old KL Train Station is quite special. It can support up to three meters of snow. Why? Because when the station was built, Malaysia was under British rule. The station was built to England’s railway specifications. Railroad stations in England needed to withstand snow.

In 1986, the Old KL Train Station underwent significant renovations. Modern counterparts replaced old features. The exterior was repaired and preserved. Air-conditioned halls and tourism information counters were added. But parts of the original interior designs remain. You can still see them in the Heritage Station Hotel.

The Old KL Train Station’s role changed over time. In 1995, KTM Komuter services were introduced. In 2001, long-distance trains moved to Kuala Lumpur Sentral. This reduced the Old KL Train Station’s importance. It became a stop for Komuter and goods services.

The Heritage Station Hotel closed in 2011. It briefly reopened in 2014. Then it closed again. In 2007, the station was reopened as a railway museum.

Take a moment to appreciate the platforms. The station has three platforms serving four railway tracks. The platforms were renovated in 2009. This improved access for Komuter trains.

When completed in 1917, the station had a main terminal building. It also had three platforms. The main hall housed ticket counters and railway offices. The “Raj” styling combines Western and Mughal elements. Horseshoe and ogee arches dominate the design. Large chhatris adorn the corners.

The Old KL Train Station stands as a beautiful reminder of Kuala Lumpur’s past. Its unique architecture and history make it a must-see. It connects us to the city’s colonial past.
