The Rigpe Dorje Centre opened its doors in 1987. Its founder His Eminence the 3rd Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche had a vision. He wanted a place for the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism particularly within the Karma Kagyu tradition. This spiritual leader had a deep connection to Montreal. It began in 1976 during a visit with the 16th Karmapa. He touched many hearts and minds. Even after the 16th Karmapa’s passing in 1981 he continued offering teachings and blessings.
The centre started small. It was an informal group studying the Dharma. It gradually evolved into a thriving community. It now offers a range of programs and resources. The growth reflects Rinpoche’s enduring influence. His vision lives on in the vibrant community.
Rinpoche wasn’t just a spiritual leader. He was a humanitarian. He established the Rigpe Dorje Foundation. This organization addresses social educational and medical needs in India Nepal and Tibet. The lineage of Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoches is significant. It goes back to the 19th century. Renowned scholar writer and teacher Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye laid the groundwork. The 3rd Rinpoche was a master a heart son of the 16th Karmapa. His devotion exemplifies the Guru-Disciple relationship. The name Rigpe Dorje itself honors his Root Teacher.
Though Rinpoche passed away in 1992 his legacy endures. His Eminence the 4th Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche carries the torch. The centre continues to flourish. It provides weekly programs guided by resident lamas. Visiting teachers enrich the schedule with seminars and retreats. Classes are offered in Tibetan English and French.
