Behold the Tallah Tank a Kolkata landmark. This magnificent structure stands tall a testament to engineering prowess. Built in 1911 it’s the world’s largest overhead water reservoir. The Tallah Tank wasn’t just built it was a gift. Babu Khelat Chandra Ghosh a philanthropist donated the land. He was a man of dignity a social reformer close to the British. In his honor a nearby lane was renamed Khelat Babu Lane.

The Tallah Tank’s creation was a feat of civil engineering and metallurgy. Chief Engineer WB MacCabe designed it. The site was chosen because of existing smaller tanks. A solid foundation was crucial due to the immense weight. The water alone weighs 40000 tons the structure another 8500 tons.

Construction involved several firms. T C Mukherjee & Co. handled piling. Sir R N Mukherjee’s firm Martin & Co. did the foundation. Arracon & Co. and Babu Kali Sunkar Mitter worked on the roof. The steel and anti-corrosion plates came from England. The Tallah Tank was completed in January 1911. It was officially commissioned on May 16 1911 by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.

The Tallah Tank stands 110 feet high. It’s 16 feet deep. It covers 103000 square feet. The Tallah Tank has four compartments. Each one is independent for easy cleaning or repair. It’s a balancer. There are no separate pipes for filling and delivery. The pumping engine at Palta might not meet midday demand. The Tallah Tank automatically compensates. It refills at night when demand is lower.

This incredible structure has survived many challenges. During World War II there were fears of Japanese bombing. Artificial grass covered the roof. It disguised the tank as a playground. It survived the 1934 Bihar and Bengal earthquake. The Tallah Tank is a true survivor. Its history is woven into the fabric of Kolkata. It is a symbol of resilience and a vital part of the city’s heritage. The Tallah Tank continues to serve Kolkata providing water to millions. It’s a reminder of Kolkata’s past and a testament to the city’s enduring spirit.
