Over 2600 gravestones stand silent. They whisper stories of the Jewish community in Hanover. Welcome to the Jüdischer Friedhof An der Strangriede.

This cemetery is more than just a resting place. It’s a living testament to the history of Hannover’s Jewish people. Opened in 1864 it served as the main cemetery for the Jewish community until 1924. The Jüdischer Friedhof An der Strangriede reflects a pivotal period. This was a time of significant growth and societal emancipation for Hannover’s Jews. The gravestones themselves tell the story. Many feature inscriptions in German. This shows the community’s desire for integration. Elaborate and individual designs replaced traditional styles.

The Jüdischer Friedhof An der Strangriede is also home to a unique structure. The Predigthalle is a brick building with arched windows. It’s the only surviving sacred building designed by Edwin Oppler. This renowned 19th-century architect also designed synagogues in Hannover and Breslau. Sadly both were destroyed on Kristallnacht in 1938. The Predigthalle holds a somber significance. After 1941 it was used as a holding center for Hannover’s Jews. From there many were deported to extermination camps.

Among the many notable graves here is that of Edwin Oppler himself. His grave is in the Cohen family plot. It features a relief of the New Synagogue. You’ll also find the graves of prominent figures. There’s the Berliner family including Joseph Berliner brother of Emil Berliner founder of the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft. Another is Louis Kugelmann a physician and friend of Karl Marx. These individuals represent the diverse contributions of the Jewish community to Hannover’s rich tapestry.

The Jüdischer Friedhof An der Strangriede isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a garden monument. It’s a place of reflection. It’s a powerful reminder of a community’s resilience. A community’s faith. And a community’s enduring legacy. As you walk among the stones remember the lives they represent. Remember their stories. And remember the importance of preserving this vital piece of Hannover’s history. The Jüdischer Friedhof An der Strangriede continues to serve as a solemn reminder of the past. It’s a place where history whispers from the stones. It’s a place where we remember. And it’s a place where we learn.
