Ever wonder which high school can claim it was named after a president still in office? That’s Herbert Hoover High School. This Glendale institution has stood proudly for over 80 years. Herbert Hoover High School is named for Herbert Hoover. He was the 31st president. The school opened in September 1929. At that time, Herbert Hoover was the current president. This makes Herbert Hoover High School unique.
Originally, Herbert Hoover High School sat on 18.6 acres. It served students from 1929 to 1966. Except for the auditorium and physical education facilities, the original buildings were demolished. A new facility was completed in 1969. The campus expanded in 1992. A 33-classroom facility addressed student growth.
A major remodel was completed in 2010. This was thanks to voter approval of Measure K bond. The most striking change was connecting the upper and lower quads. An amphitheater was created in the upper quad area.
Herbert Hoover High School is part of a neighborhood cluster. It includes Mark Keppel Elementary School and Eleanor J. Toll Middle School. The school’s colors are purple and white. The mascot is the Tornado.
Herbert Hoover High School offers many Advanced Placement classes. There are 22 different AP classes. These include English, Calculus, Statistics and History. Students can also study languages like French, Spanish and Italian. The school also provides diverse subjects like Psychology, Art and Music Theory.
Herbert Hoover High School has a history of racial tensions. These tensions involved Armenian and Hispanic/Latino students. These tensions sometimes led to violence.
The school has a long-standing sports rivalry. It is with Glendale High School. The football game is the biggest event. It is known as BGD or Beat Glendale Day. Events include The Poster Drop and spirit assemblies.
Herbert Hoover High School offers various sports. These include water polo, volleyball, soccer, and basketball. Students can also participate in American football, baseball, softball, track, and cross country. The school also offers golf, pep squad, swimming and wrestling.
The Hoover Tornado Marching Band is award-winning. It has won state championships. The band competes every year. It represents the school and city.
