Fast forward to the 1990s. The area around Tangtou Bridge was declared unsafe. Yet, the Nanshan District government did not immediately act. It wasn’t until 2008 that the authorities began renting and locking up these buildings. The final families were evicted in December 2013. The site was sealed off. Tangtou Bridge remained.
Think about the government representative assigned to unlock the buildings. He grew up nearby. His family arrived with the border forces in the late 1970s. He spent his childhood crabbing along the coast. This coast once reached the southern side of Shennan Road. He knew the villagers. He understood their history.
That representative observed a growing distance between villagers and outsiders after 1992. Villagers were thrust into the role of landlords without traditional livelihoods. Shenzhen transformed from fishing villages into a bustling metropolis. Shenzhen became China’s first Special Economic Zone. This led to rapid growth. Tangtou Bridge stands amidst this.
Shenzhen’s population boomed. It went from 30000 people to millions. Shenzhen became a hub for technology finance and trade. Tangtou Bridge watched it all.
