From humble beginnings in a small store building on Mapleash Avenue the South Gate Church of Christ stands as a testament to faith and community. On May 10 1953 approximately 50 people gathered for the first service. Brother F H Curtis delivered the sermon. The offering that day was around $150. This marked the start of the Mapleash church of Christ. It later evolved into the Eastside church of Christ.

The congregation’s early years were marked by growth and change. They moved to a new site purchasing the old Eastside building in October 1953. The dedication of the new building occurred in December 1954. Expansion continued. Additional classrooms were added in 1958. A 500-seat auditorium followed in 1968. This shows the increasing influence of the church within its community. This consistent expansion showcased the congregation’s growing impact.

In 2012 a new campus was constructed on Pulaski Highway. The Eastside church of Christ then relocated. It began meeting in this new structure under its current name South Gate Church of Christ. The name changed but the dedication remained. The South Gate Church of Christ continues to uphold its core values. These values include the Bible as the ultimate authority and a commitment to service.
