Salomés story unfolds in the heart of northern France, nestled within the Nord department and enveloped by the vibrant energy of the Métropole Européenne de Lille. Salomés history whispers from the 10th century, where it first appeared in records as “Salomones Mansun.” This small rural estate, or “meix,” served as the foundation for the dynamic community we see today. Salomé sits at the crossroads of a bustling network of rivers and roads. It marks the edge of the former Pas-de-Calais coal basin. The Aire-à-La Bassée Canal flows through Salom, connecting it to the larger Valenciennes-Dunkerque Canal and fueling the local economy. Salomé’s strategic location has shaped its destiny. The village’s proximity to the fortified town of La Bassée meant it was often caught in the crossfire of invasions. Before the French Revolution, the village was divided into fiefs and seigneuries, some of which still bear their historical names. Powerful families like the Counts of Hespel held sway in the region, their influence extending across nearby territories and leaving their mark on Salom. One such mark is the Église Saint-Vaast. Built in the 19th century by the Chevalier Albéricc d’Hespel d’Hocron, the church has weathered its own storms. Almost destroyed during World War I, it was rebuilt in the 1920s. It suffered damage again at the outset of World War II, only to be lovingly restored in the postwar years. The scars of history, however, are not Salom’s only story. The German military cemetery from World War I and two Commonwealth graves from World War II, located on the road to Hantay, serve as poignant reminders of past conflicts. Salom, despite its trials, has always rebounded. In 1918, emerging from the ruins of World War I’s battles on the Lys plain, Salom’s resilience shone through. Today, Salom stands as a testament to its ability to adapt and thrive.
