This unassuming meadow, now a nature reserve teeming with orchids and cuckooflowers, was once a winter wonderland. Between 1920 and 1940, Skaters’ Meadow transformed into a vibrant ice rink. For just sixpence, people could glide beneath the single lamppost, its light painting the frozen surface. Imagine the laughter echoing across the ice as skaters twirled and glided. This wasn’t just simple recreation. It was a revival of a centuries-old fen skating tradition. Long before the lamppost, people used sharpened animal bones to traverse the frozen fens. Skaters’ Meadow became a modern echo of this ancient practice. The meadow’s flat expanse, perfect for skating, was a far cry from the dense forests that once covered East Anglia. Those forests were burned to create farmland, leaving behind the fertile fens. The Dutch, with their expertise in drainage, further shaped this landscape. They brought steel ice skates, which evolved into the “fen runner”. These skates weren’t just for leisure. They were essential tools, allowing agricultural workers to travel across the frozen fields. Winter became a time of thrilling races across the ice. Skaters competed for prizes, sometimes even joints of meat hung outside the local pub. Skaters’ Meadow, with its solitary lamppost, hosted its own share of winter revelry. Now, the meadow rarely floods. The lamppost stands as a silent sentinel, a reminder of winters past.
