Have you ever paused to consider the stories etched in bronze and stone? Right here stands the Monument aux aviateurs belges. It is a poignant tribute to Belgian airmen. They fell during the First World War. This memorial stands as a testament to their courage and sacrifice.

The Monument aux aviateurs belges originally stood at Place Louise. It was inaugurated in 1926. In 1972 it was moved to its current location at the entrance of Avenue Franklin Roosevelt.

Pierre de Soete sculpted the memorial. Jules Brunfaut designed the pedestal. The monument features a bronze group. It depicts a winged female figure. She supports a fallen man. This symbolizes the heroic airmen ascending to immortality.

De Soete found inspiration in an unexpected place. He watched sparrows struggling to lift a fallen fledgling. This inspired his vision of a goddess lifting a fallen airman. She brings him to the heights of immortality.

The high pedestal is made of blue stone. It takes the form of a small granite obelisk. The inscription reads: “Aux héros de l’air – 1914-1918 – Aan de Helden van de Luchtvaart”. This translates to “To the heroes of the air” in both French and Dutch.

Originally only the French inscription was present. The Dutch text was added later in bronze letters. Finally the French text was also presented in bronze. This ensured equal contrast in both languages.

The sides of the Monument aux aviateurs belges list the names of fallen aviators. Among them are P. Anciau L. Artan de Saint Martin and many others. These names immortalize their sacrifice.

The back of the monument bears the inscription: “Opgericht door de konijnklijke Aeroclub van België” and “Érigé par l’aéroclub royal de Belgique”. This shows it was erected by the Royal Aeroclub of Belgium. The date VI-VI-MDCCCCXXVI which is June 6 1926 is also inscribed.

Look closely at the plaque. It reads: “Salus Patriae Suprema Lex Fédération Nationale des Croix de Feu 9-10 Mai 1930”. This translates to “The safety of the nation is the supreme law”.

Today the Monument aux aviateurs belges stands. It is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom. It honors those who soared through the skies. They gave their lives in service to their country. Take a moment to reflect on their bravery and sacrifice. Their memory lives on. It is etched in the heart of Brussels.
