In 1822, a man named Nathaniel Lynch, one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred” colonists, established a ferry across the San Jacinto River. This ferry, known as Lynch’s Ferry, was located right here at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and the San Jacinto River. The Lynchburg Town Ferry Plaque commemorates this historical ferry crossing and the role it played in the early days of Texas. The Lynchburg Town Ferry Plaque stands as a testament to Nathaniel Lynch’s vision and the significance of this crossing during a pivotal period in Texas history. Before the Battle of San Jacinto, hundreds of Texan settlers fleeing the approaching Mexican army used Lynch’s Ferry to cross the San Jacinto River. The ferry served as a vital lifeline during the Runaway Scrape of 1836. Imagine the scene: a desperate exodus of families, their wagons overflowing with belongings, all rushing towards Lynch’s Ferry, their only hope of escape. This very spot witnessed the frantic scramble for safety, the fear and uncertainty etched on the faces of those seeking refuge. Though the town of Lynchburg that Lynch envisioned never fully materialized, his name and legacy live on through this plaque and the ferry that still operates near this site today, a tribute to the enduring spirit of early Texas.
