From a ripple to a roar, that’s the story of UCD Rowing Club. Established in 1917 as the University College Dublin Rowing Club, its initial ripples started in Ringsend, at the Commercial Rowing Club. Imagine the creak of wooden boats and the splash of oars in the Liffey. The club found its stride, changing its name to University College Dublin Boat Club in 1926 and moving to Dolphin Rowing Club in Islandbridge two years later. The UCD Rowing Club truly came into its own in 1932 with its own boathouse. Success followed swiftly. The Wylie Cup was claimed in 1938. Then the Irish Championships for the Men’s Senior 8+ were won in 1939 and 1940, marking UCD Rowing Club’s dominance. Their prowess reached international waters in 1947 with their first appearance at Henley Royal Regatta. They reached the semi-final of the Thames Challenge Cup, a testament to their growing skill. This same year saw the inception of the Gannon Cup. This cup commemorates Ciaran Gannon, UCD captain in 1937 and 1938, who tragically died serving in Burma in 1944. The Gannon Cup pits UCD Rowing Club against Dublin University Boat Club, a continuing rivalry born from respect. UCD Rowing Club’s influence extended to the 1948 Olympic Games. Five rowers, a cox, coach, and manager represented Ireland in the Men’s 8+. The 1960s saw the club solidify its position, winning the Irish Men’s Senior 8+ three times. Their alumni club, Old Collegians, added two more victories. This momentum carried into the 70s with “The Animals” achieving a three-in-a-row victory in the Irish Men’s Senior 8+. Their crowning achievement was winning the Ladies’ Challenge Plate at Henley in 1974, the first Irish crew to do so since 1875. Two members of this legendary crew later represented Ireland at the 1976 Olympic Games. The club expanded further in 1975 with the foundation of UCD Ladies Boat Club. The current boathouse, a testament to their enduring presence, opened in 1977. UCD Rowing Club has continued to make waves. They’ve achieved success at the Irish Championships and Henley Royal Regatta. A notable win includes the Prince Albert Challenge Cup in 2010. Members have represented Ireland at numerous World Rowing events, including Paul O’Donovan and Claire Lambe at the 2016 Olympic Games. UCD Rowing Club isn’t confined to Islandbridge. They have gym facilities on the UCD campus and share a boathouse at Blessington Lake. From humble beginnings in Ringsend to Olympic glory, the UCD Rowing Club continues to write its story, one powerful stroke at a time.
