How about a story of faith, community, and a bit of friendly rivalry? This is the story of Colby Methodist Church. Colby has long been associated with Methodism. John Wesley himself preached nearby in 1781. His visit paved the way for Methodism to take root in this area.

The story of Colby Methodist Church really begins with two chapels. These chapels stood on opposite sides of the main road. They represented two branches of Methodism. There was the Colby Primitive Methodist Chapel and the Colby Wesleyan Methodist Chapel.

Colby Primitive Methodist Chapel came first in 1822. A local house became the Preaching House for Primitive Methodists. By 1883, they had their own chapel on Main Road. The Primitive Methodists were known for their fervent style of worship. They initially provided no seating to open their chapel first.

Colby Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in 1833. This chapel stood on Station Road. The two chapels became friendly rivals. Each wanted to serve the community the best. There was great rivalry to see who could open their chapel first.

In 1950, a significant change occurred. The two Methodist chapels in Colby united. The Primitive Methodist Chapel on Main Road closed. It became a private house. The congregation then gathered at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on Station Road. That chapel continues to be Colby Methodist Church today.
