A bronze model. A miniature castle. That’s what you see before you the Rödelheimer Schloss Sculpture. It’s more than just a pretty replica though. It’s a window into centuries of history.

This sculpture in the Solmspark is a 1:40 scale model of the former Rödelheimer Schloss. A castle stood here as early as 1150 perhaps even earlier. It was strategically located near a ford on the Nidda River a vital trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne. Imagine the bustling activity centuries ago. Merchants crossing the ford castle lords collecting tolls.

The original castle had a long and eventful history. It was a medieval fortress. Different families owned and fought over it. The city of Frankfurt even purchased shares in the castle. Eventually it became a Reichsburg a castle under imperial protection. This illustrates Frankfurt’s growing influence and power.

In 1802 the medieval castle was largely demolished. The counts of Solms-Rödelheim and Assenheim then built a classical style Schloss on its ruins. It stood until 1944 when a bomb attack destroyed it. The remaining ruins were torn down in 1956. The area became the park you see today.

The Rödelheimer Schloss Sculpture was erected in 2008. The local history society wanted to give people an idea of what the Schloss looked like. They used old photographs and drawings to create this bronze model. Even the former mayor Petra Roth laid the foundation stone in 2007. A time capsule was placed inside containing newspapers and coins.

Notice the L-shape of the model. See the covered entrance area? And the double staircase leading down to the garden. The eastern tower is particularly prominent. It marks the location of the old keep. The sculpture truly captures the essence of the lost Schloss.

It is a powerful symbol of Rödelheim’s past. A reminder of the castle’s significance. Its enduring importance in the history of Frankfurt. It is a testament to local pride and historical preservation. The bronze model brings the past to life. It allows us to visualize a lost landmark. A vivid reminder of a rich and complex history.
