Standing right here before the impressive Windsor State School, it’s hard to imagine that this grand building was once just a dream in the minds of the local residents. Back in 1865, Windsor was a bustling town, but its children were lacking a proper school. The community rallied together, lobbying the government, donating their hard-earned money, and even lending a helping hand. In July 1865, their efforts bore fruit: the Bowen Bridge Road State School opened its doors, although it was actually just a humble building in what is now Windsor Memorial Park, right across the road from this very spot. Five decades passed, and the school struggled to accommodate the growing population. Then, in 1915, the foundation stone for a new school was laid, a testament to the community’s belief in education. The grand, heritage-listed Windsor State School, with its intricate brickwork and towering spires, was the result. In 1925, a swimming pool was added to the grounds, a symbol of the changing times and the growing importance of physical activity. The school grounds themselves have seen their fair share of change, too, acting as a temporary base for the US Navy during World War II. And this iconic school continues to be a cornerstone of its community, a place where generations of children have learned, grown, and made memories that will last a lifetime.
