Considering that Klein High School is more than just bricks and mortar, what story does it hold? Klein High School stands proudly in Klein, Texas. It is located about 20 miles from Downtown Houston. Klein High serves students in grades 9 through 12. The school’s motto is “Together, We Make the Difference”.
Let’s step back in time. The story of Klein High begins long before its current location. In 1928, five common school districts merged. They formed Rural High School District Number One. This included French School, Hildebrandt School, Oak Grove School, and Willow Creek School. Even Kohrville School, a school for Black children, joined the consolidation.
The first high school building stood on Spring-Cypress Road. Today, it sits behind the district’s central office. In 1938, Rural High School District Number One transformed. It became Klein Independent School District, and its high school became Klein High School. A significant move occurred in 1963. Klein High School moved to its current location.
The old main building faced demolition in 2010. This made way for a completely new facility. Construction finished in December 2014, replacing all existing buildings. In 2017, some zoning boundaries shifted. Areas west of Kuykendahl Road, previously in the Klein Collins High School zone, were rezoned to Klein High. Also, parts of the Klein Forest High School zone, between Cypress Creek and Farm to Market Road 1960, were rezoned to Klein High.
Klein High holds accreditation from the Texas Education Agency. It is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 2006, 93% of the graduating class planned to attend college. They received over $7 million in scholarships.
The school received a B grade from the Texas Education Agency in 2021-22. It earned an overall score of 89 out of 100. Klein High excelled in Student Achievement, earning an A grade.
Klein High School is a hub of activity. It competes in UIL Region II District 15. The Klein High Bearkats have clinched several state championships. Boys’ soccer teams triumphed in 1997, 1999, and 2005. The baseball team won in 1998. Tennis players excelled in 1982-83 and 1989-90. The chess team was victorious in 2002. The cheerleaders earned a national championship in 2006. They were also Grand Champions in 2000.
The Klein High School orchestra has a rich history. It was named the Texas Music Educators Association honor orchestra multiple times. The Wind Symphony was a National Wind Band winner in 2008. In 2010, a Klein junior varsity debate team finished first at the Harvard National Debate Tournament.
Many notable individuals walked the halls of Klein High School. Kevin Adams, a theater designer, is a four-time Tony Award winner. Josh Barfield played baseball for the San Diego Padres and Cleveland Indians. Matthew Bomer is an actor known for “White Collar”. Lyle Lovett, a musician, is a four-time Grammy Award winner. Laura Wilkinson is an Olympic gold medalist diver. Sylvester Turner is the Mayor of Houston. These alumni exemplify the diverse talents fostered at Klein High School.
