How about diving into the history of a church that started with just 17 members and a humble offering of Rs. 11? That church is the C.S.I. World Redeemer’s Church. It stands as a testament to faith and community in Chennai.
The story of C.S.I. World Redeemer’s Church begins on June 14, 1959. A small fellowship met at the Community Hall in Trustpuram. Rev. J. Y. Barnabas organized the meeting. Rev. C.S. Balraj led it. Miss Padma Isaac requested a church for regular services. Rev. Pettit agreed to conduct services if a place could be found. Mrs. S. Selvanayagam offered her car shed on Central Avenue Road.
Mr. D.L.D. Earnest provided music. Professor Dowie Abraham and Mr. Samuel delivered the message. This marked the humble start of a fellowship. By God’s grace, it grew into a large church. It offered solace to generations.
Miss Padma Isaac and Dr. Miss C. Moses worked hard. The first regular service was held on June 21, 1959. Bishop Madras Rev. David Chellappa led the service. It took place at Modern High School Campus. A choir was formed with Mr. Bernard Thomas as Choir Master. Mr. Earnest played the organ.
Reverends H.E.C. Pettit and others conducted services. They included D. Thomas, Rolf Taylor and David. Also involved were Purushotham, Mr. Swaminathan and R.D. Newel. N. Sugirtharaj and Gembeeram also helped through City Mission. In 1960, the church purchased its current site. Mr. Koilpillai laid the basement stone. Mrs. Sheela Tribe prepared the structural drawing in 1963.
On October 25, 1963, the church was named “Church of the Risen Redeemer”. Bishop Rev. David Chellappa dedicated it. He also suggested the name. Today, C.S.I. World Redeemer’s Church has over 500 families. Around 1000 members attend Sunday worship. It is one of the oldest parishes in Madras Diocese. The church has a rich history.
The C.S.I. World Redeemer’s Church supports various ministries. One notable ministry is for the visually impaired. It started in 2002 under Rev.E.W.Christopher. Mr. Daniel identifies locations and creates groups. These groups assist visually impaired people. Leela William leads the team. Church volunteers read to them every Sunday from 4 to 6 PM. They also help with teaching aids and notes. Volunteers assist as scribes during exams. They share knowledge to keep students updated. Some students have become teachers and professors.
The church also runs a Village Ministry. It shares the gospel in villages. It started in Arukundram village in 1995. People visit villages every month. They sing, preach and distribute Bibles. They also provide medical assistance. They celebrate Christmas with the villagers.
The C.S.I. World Redeemer’s Church has built churches in several villages. These include Arukundram, Vippedu and Balamangalam. They also minister in areas around Sathyavedu village. The church aims to spread Christ’s love through its actions.
