Did you know that West Adams Christian Church played a pivotal role in the integration of Los Angeles? Standing before you is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to a significant chapter in the city’s history. West Adams Christian Church wasn’t always the vibrant multi-racial congregation it is today. Initially built in 1932 it was a predominantly white church. The magnificent Gothic Revival architecture was a gift to the community from Dr Isaac and Ona Bell McCarty. They spared no expense. The church cost upwards of $250000. Many of the stunning interior features even came from Czechoslovakia. The McCartys themselves were not regular attendees though. They preferred a church closer to their home.

However the story of West Adams Christian Church is far from simply architectural splendor. The church’s true significance lies in its transformation during the mid-1950s. Under the leadership of Reverend Kring Allen the church underwent a radical integration. This was a bold move at a time of deep racial segregation. The church’s integration wasn’t easy. Reverend Allen faced considerable resistance from some members of the board. He stood firm. He declared that he would not lead a segregated church. His persistence paid off.

The church’s integration was a resounding success. It became a beacon of hope and a model for other churches in Los Angeles. Attendance soared. By the 1980s over 1000 people actively participated in the congregation. West Adams itself has undergone demographic shifts. It’s now majority Latino with a large Black population. However West Adams Christian Church remains a symbol of its integrated past and a testament to the power of faith and community. The church’s integration was not only a local triumph. It reflected a broader societal change. The impact of Reverend Allen’s courageous decision is still felt today. West Adams Christian Church stands as a powerful reminder of the struggle for racial equality. Its beautiful architecture now stands as a symbol of unity.
