Pen Tower Sculpture

Carved against the Hanoi sky, the Pen Tower stands as a testament to Vietnamese scholarship. The Pen Tower, built in 1865, is more than just a structure. It’s a symbol, a tribute to the Trinh Lords and their contributions to literature and defense against invaders. The Pen Tower rises 28 meters high atop a small stone hill near Ngoc Son Temple. It’s crowned with a striking stone feather pen, pointing skyward. This isn’t just an artistic flourish. It’s a visual representation of the inscription carved into the tower, “Ta Thanh Thien,” meaning “Write onto the sky.” Scholar Nguyen Van Sieu oversaw the construction of the Pen Tower, along with the Tran Ba Pavilion and The Huc Bridge. He envisioned the tower as a beacon of knowledge, a monument to the pursuit of academic excellence. The Pen Tower is a beautiful fusion of art and history, perfectly harmonized with the serene landscape of Hoan Kiem Lake.
