Echoes of hammers and hope resonate here. This is the story of Dorfkirche Birkholz. This early Gothic fieldstone church stands in Birkholz a district of Bernau near Berlin. Its tale is one of resilience. It is a testament to community spirit.

Dorfkirche Birkholz dates back to the second half of the 13th century. Dendrochronological research pinpoints the felling of its roof timbers to 1266. Imagine the village in that era. Craftsmen carefully raised these walls stone by stone. The building includes a rectangular choir. Originally, the church had a west tower as wide as the nave.

In 1375 the church owned land. The pastor received goods from the windmill. Before the Reformation a clergyman from Bernau managed the parish.

The 15th century brought changes. A vault was added under the church roof. The original lancet windows were modified. You can still see some blocked lancet windows on the north wall today. In the 16th century a sacristy was added to the north side of the choir of Dorfkirche Birkholz.

After the Reformation in 1575, Birkholz church became a branch of Schwanebeck. In 1541, Tempelhof gave the church a new chalice. The old one had been stolen. In 1598, it gained a new baptismal font. The church’s book started in 1599 and still exists.

Eleonora von Pölnitz donated the pulpit in 1681. Her father was Prince Moritz of Orange. In 1821, Karl Hindenberg gifted a crystal chandelier to Dorfkirche Birkholz.

However, disaster struck on October 8, 1827. A fire destroyed the tower. The sons of Otto Carl Friedrich von Voss rebuilt it. Salomo Sachs designed the classicist tower. Carl Justus Heckmann covered the roof with zinc. Carl August Mencke gilded the tower cross.

During World War II, the tower of Dorfkirche Birkholz suffered damage. It was hit during a search for snipers. Neglect led to water damage. By 1972, the wooden tower was leaning. The street had to be closed.

In 1972, the community made a difficult choice. They controversially demolished the tower. The blast caused great damage. Only the choir side remained. After the reunification in 1990, restoration began. The choir area was largely restored. In 1993, the church gained landmark protection. In 2001, a flat glass roof covered the nave of Dorfkirche Birkholz.

Since 2002, the Förderverein Dorfkirche Birkholz e. V. has been raising funds. Their goal is to rebuild the 1829 tower. For the 750th anniversary in 2016, a wooden structure secured the arch.

Dorfkirche Birkholz never had its own parish office after 1970. The parish office in Schwanebeck assisted.

Dorfkirche Birkholz is more than stone and glass. It is a symbol of faith, loss, and renewal. It is a place where history whispers. It is a place where hope endures.
