Cambridge’s Laundry Farm Farmhouse. A deceptively simple name for a place steeped in history. Laundry Farm Farmhouse stands on Barton Road. It’s currently part of the University of Cambridge. The farmhouse isn’t just a building. It represents a fascinating blend of academic life and rural practicality. Did you know the University of Cambridge once operated a farm and laundry service? Laundry Farm Farmhouse was the heart of this operation. Located on Barton Road, it oversaw the washing for the university and the surrounding community. Historic England lists Laundry Farm Farmhouse, specifically noting its location on Bedford Road. This might seem confusing, given its Barton Road address. Older records sometimes referenced both roads interchangeably. This reflects the evolving nature of Cambridge’s streets. The farm itself dates back to at least the mid-1800s. Records show the land changing hands several times. It went from the Sparrow family to George Roe, then to his daughter, Elizabeth Swann. The Leys School took over the farm and laundry in 1887. They used the farm to supply their students with milk, vegetables, and fruit. A fire in 1889 caused significant damage. The school rebuilt the farm. They continued using it until at least 1911. Census records from this time reveal the names of the people who lived and worked there. Charles Free was the farm manager, and the Spalding family worked in the laundry. The farm changed hands again, eventually becoming part of the University of Cambridge’s estate. The large training room in the Laundry Farm Maintenance Unit reflects this later use. The room can accommodate up to twenty people. This suggests the farmhouse continued to play a practical role, even after its agricultural heyday.
