A beacon of faith in New Orleans. That’s the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church. It stands as a testament to resilience and community. The Franklin Avenue Baptist Church has a rich history, deeply intertwined with the city’s vibrant tapestry of cultures and experiences. Founded in 1940, the church quickly became a spiritual anchor for the community. In 1986, a dynamic leader stepped onto its pulpit: Pastor Fred Luter. With only 65 members, the church seemed small. But under Luter’s guidance, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church blossomed. His “FRANgelism” – focusing on friends, relatives, associates, and neighbors – resonated. The church grew exponentially, requiring a larger space. In 1997, a new 2,000-seat auditorium was dedicated, a symbol of the church’s expanding reach. Then came Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The storm devastated New Orleans, flooding the church and scattering its members. Yet, even amidst the destruction, the spirit of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church remained unbroken. Pastor Luter vowed to rebuild, and the congregation rallied behind him. They even established new campuses in Baton Rouge and Houston to support displaced members. The Franklin Avenue Baptist Church reopened its renovated New Orleans location in 2008. It was a joyous homecoming for the returning “Franklinites,” demonstrating their unwavering faith and resilience. The church continued to thrive, culminating in the 2018 dedication of a new 3,500-seat auditorium. This impressive expansion mirrored the growth and enduring strength of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church community. It stands today as a testament to the power of faith, community, and the indomitable spirit of New Orleans.
