G\u00fcnter Litfin’s story is one of desperation and the yearning for freedom. In 1961, the Wall abruptly separated East and West Berlin. G\u00fcnter, who worked in West Berlin, suddenly found himself cut off from his livelihood and his aspirations. He grew increasingly critical of the GDR’s oppressive system and decided to escape.
On August 24, 1961, G\u00fcnter Litfin attempted to swim across the Humboldthafen harbor to reach West Berlin. Tragically, his desperate swim ended in a hail of bullets. East Berlin policemen opened fire, killing the 24-year-old. G\u00fcnter Litfin became one of the first to die trying to cross the Berlin Wall.
The Gedenkst\u00e4tte G\u00fcnter Litfin centers around a former command post of the GDR border troops. This massive square watchtower is one of the 32 command posts. Officers controlled the garrisons of the 280 border towers from here. They also organized patrols along the Berlin Wall. The commander was responsible for preventing escapes in his section. He maintained direct contact with superiors, watchtower garrisons, and the Volkspolizei. This is where all information converged. A 24-hour operation-ready alarm group was housed here. It could be deployed to stop anyone trying to flee.
After the fall of the Wall, G\u00fcnter’s brother, J\u00fcrgen Litfin, dedicated himself to preserving this site. He saved the former command post from demolition. In 2003, on the anniversary of G\u00fcnter’s death, J\u00fcrgen inaugurated the Gedenkst\u00e4tte G\u00fcnter Litfin. In 2017, J\u00fcrgen Litfin handed over the memorial to the Berlin Wall Foundation.
