The Garden Court Condos, originally the Garden Court Apartments, hold a special place in Detroit’s history. None other than Albert Kahn, the architectural genius behind many of Detroit’s iconic landmarks. He designed these apartments for J. Harrington Walker, of the Hiram Walker & Sons distillery fame. Interestingly, Walker’s own home was situated just across the street. Upon the building’s completion, he moved into the top floor of the south tower. Can you imagine the view he had from up there?
Originally, the Garden Court housed 32 lavishly large apartments, a symbol of luxury and exclusivity. The building’s H-shape design, the limestone facade of the first two stories, and the red brick of the remaining seven are all distinctive features. In 2008, the building underwent a transformation, converting the apartments into 65 condominiums, ranging from one to three bedrooms. Even Detroit’s Mayor Dave Bing once called this place home during his time in office, a testament to its enduring appeal. A state senator, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and several local artists have also resided within these historic walls.
The Garden Court has even graced the silver screen. The building was featured in the television show “Martin,” and the movie “LOL,” starring Demi Moore and Miley Cyrus, was filmed within its walls.
