Did you know that right beneath your feet lies a forgotten railway a ghost of Staten Island’s past? Welcome to the North Shore Branch a railway line that once bustled with activity but now stands mostly silent.

The North Shore Branch of the Staten Island Railway once connected St George to Port Ivory. It was part of the Staten Island Rapid Transit a network far more extensive than what remains today. Cornelius Vanderbilt himself started the Staten Island Railway in 1851. This was initially a much smaller line. It gradually expanded reaching Tottenville by 1860.

Erastus Wiman and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad partnered to dramatically expand the network in 1883. They built the North Shore Branch and a South Beach branch. A vital piece of this expansion was the tunnel linking Stapleton to the St George Ferry. This wasn’t just any railway. The North Shore Branch was a vital artery. It connected Staten Island communities. It facilitated trade and commerce. Its tracks ran alongside the Kill Van Kull. The waves have since taken their toll. You can still see evidence of this. Smashed ties and bent rails remain.

Passenger service ended abruptly on March 31 1953. Reduced bus fares led to decreased ridership. The Baltimore & Ohio threatened to end all passenger service. The city subsidized the Tottenville line. Service on the North Shore and South Beach branches was terminated. Freight service continued. The western portion has even been reactivated in 2005. But the majority of the North Shore Branch still sits abandoned. A poignant reminder of a bygone era.

Imagine the conductors collecting fares. They would pull a cord like on trolleys. Some conductors skimmed money. They wanted to lower ridership numbers. This was a sneaky way to justify abandoning the line. Think about the workers at the Procter & Gamble plant in Port Ivory. They relied on the railway. The line’s electrification in 1925 was a significant technological achievement. It reduced travel times. The 1930s saw a massive grade crossing elimination project. This resulted in the creation of impressive viaducts.

The North Shore Branch isn’t just a railway. It is a living testament to Staten Island’s history. It’s a story of growth ambition and ultimately decline. It’s also a story of resilience. Parts are still in use today though passenger trains are long gone. The line continues to hold a place in the hearts and memories of Staten Islanders. The North Shore Branch a reminder that even in abandonment stories remain.
