St Anthony’s Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of a community. Originally built to serve the villages of Marve Malwani Rathodi and Kharodi it’s a much older building than its current structure suggests. The original church dates back to the 1630s. Imagine the small community then. Now look around you at Malad’s bustling growth.
The church suffered greatly during the Maratha-Portuguese wars. Twice it was burned to the ground. Yet the spirit of St Anthony endured. Reconstruction finally began in 1834 and was completed in 1835. A magnificent statue of St Anthony the ‘Saint of Miracles’ arrived from Portugal. It now holds pride of place on the main altar.
Today St Anthony’s Church is one of Mumbai’s oldest Catholic churches. Its congregation has exploded in size from a mere 1000 members in 1835 to 15000 today. It continues to grow. Father Menezes the parish priest speaks of a future of nearly 20000 members. This incredible expansion highlights the church’s ongoing importance to its community. The current building though cherished can’t contain this vibrant congregation. A new building is planned but the old church its heritage will be preserved for celebrations.
