Founded in 1903 the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood stands as a testament to faith and community. This wasn’t always a thriving mega-church. In its early years Hollywood was a small town. The church’s location was considered unpromising. Despite this Reverend Henry Newell and 25 adults became charter members. They pledged to prioritize God’s glory and the church’s welfare.
The church’s growth truly took off under the leadership of Stewart MacLennan from 1921 to 1941. He had a vision for a center of Christian education. He envisioned it as a beacon of God’s word. Membership soared from 651 in 1920 to 2370 by 1930. His partnership with Henrietta Mears was pivotal. Mears was the Christian Education Director. She transformed the Sunday school. Its attendance grew from 400 to over 4000. The curriculum she created formed the basis of Gospel Light Press.
Mears also founded the Forest Home Christian Conference Center. She mentored countless individuals including Billy Graham. Her influence on evangelical Christianity is undeniable. After MacLennan Louis Evans Sr. became pastor. Membership reached its peak of 8900 under his leadership. The church’s impact extended beyond its walls. This was partly due to its access to Los Angeles’ freeway system. It drew congregants from far and wide.
Raymond Lindquist succeeded Evans. He further expanded the church’s reach. Overflow congregations were common. In the 1960s closed-circuit television was used in the gymnasium for overflow services. Lloyd Ogilvie then led the church. He had a successful nationwide televised ministry. He later became Chaplain of the United States Senate. Alan Meenan followed. He oversaw a period of growth and introduced diverse worship styles. The church faced upheaval after disagreements with the Presbytery of the Pacific.
Despite challenges the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood persevered. It continued to adapt to the changing times. The church’s legacy of strong preaching and Christian education endures. It has fostered countless leaders in the church and beyond. The First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood continues its mission. It serves its community and proclaims its faith.
