Glass panels curve elegantly toward the sky. That’s what defines 50 West Street. This mixed-use tower stands tall in Lower Manhattan. It is a testament to modern architecture and urban resilience.

50 West Street, completed in 2018, is more than just a building. It embodies the spirit of New York City. Time Equities Inc. developed it. Helmut Jahn, a renowned architect, designed it.

The story of 50 West Street begins with a vision. A vision to create a structure that offers panoramic views. Its curved glass facade achieves this goal. Residents and visitors can marvel at New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island.

But the path to completion wasn’t without its challenges. Time Equities purchased the site in 1983. Initial plans faced opposition due to the lack of affordable housing. A $5 million agreement was reached. This included funds for a computer science program at a local school.

Construction began in 2008. The financial crisis brought it to a halt. Work resumed in 2013 after securing a significant loan. Developers made the building flood-resistant after Hurricane Sandy. They raised the sill height and installed floodgates. The mechanical room was moved to higher floors.

50 West Street is not only about aesthetics. It also incorporates sustainable technologies. A green roof, water-efficient fixtures, and automated blinds contribute to its LEED rating. The building has 64 stories and 191 residential units. These range from one-bedroom apartments to luxurious penthouses.

Each unit features interiors crafted by Thomas Juul-Hansen. Luxurious finishes and spacious layouts define them. Residents enjoy access to four floors of amenities. These include a water club, fitness center, and private screening room. The 64th floor features an open-air observation deck. It offers stunning views of the city.

The curved glass facade is a unique feature of 50 West Street. Each pane weighs up to 1,900 pounds. 500 of them are curved. Jahn stated that no other building uses curved glass in such volume.

Comparisons have been made to 17 State Street. Both buildings feature curved glass facades. 50 West’s curves run to the edge of the parapet. This creates a seamless vertical gesture.

The base of the building bows outward. This opens up space for Ward’s Walk. It enhances the sense of verticality. 50 West Street stands as a symbol of innovation. It is a landmark in Lower Manhattan’s skyline. It reflects the city’s dynamic spirit.

So, take a moment to appreciate 50 West Street. Its elegant design enhances the city’s skyline. It embodies architectural innovation. 50 West Street redefines luxury living in downtown Manhattan.
