“In memory of those who fought and those who fell 1914-1918” These words etched into the Oxford War Memorial in St Giles’s greet you. This isn’t just any plaque. It’s a powerful symbol of remembrance. It stands tall a testament to the sacrifices made during the First World War. The memorial was unveiled in 1921. It stands as a tribute to the citizens of Oxford who perished in the conflict.

The Oxford War Memorial is more than just stone. It’s a piece of history. It was designed by John Egerton Thorpe. However Gilbert Thomas Francis Gardner and Thomas Rayson helped bring the design to life. The final design is primarily the work of Rayson. He also created other war memorials in Oxfordshire. The memorial is a striking structure. It features a tall cross. The cross is adorned with fleur-de-lys between the angles.

The base of the memorial is octagonal. It rests on seven steps. These steps offer a place to reflect. They also provided space for wreaths. The octagonal shape has significance. It represents the six days of creation. The seventh day represents rest. The eighth signifies eternity. The plinth features eight carved shields. They depict symbols. These include the coats of arms of Oxford City and University. They also represent the Army Air Force and Navy.

Originally the memorial commemorated the First World War. Later inscriptions were added. They remember those who died in the Second World War. Even more recently further inscriptions were added in 2018. This was to enhance the legibility of the original inscription. The memorial was built by Wooldridge & Simpson. The stone came from Clipsham. The total cost was £1500. The unveiling ceremony was a grand affair. General Sir Robert Fanshawe unveiled it. The Bishop of Oxford Hubert Burge dedicated it.

Today the Oxford War Memorial remains a focal point. It serves as a reminder of the immense loss and sacrifice during wartime. It also represents the enduring spirit of the city of Oxford. Take a moment to reflect. Remember those who gave their lives in service to their country.
