What is a bust of the Athenian general Themistocles doing here in Potsdam’s Neuer Garten? The Themistocles-Herme is not the original, but a replica. The original journeyed quite a bit before it vanished after World War II. This replica stands as a testament to a time when rulers admired classical art and sought to bring a touch of antiquity to their gardens. King Friedrich Wilhelm II acquired the original Themistocles-Herme. It was crafted from white marble after an antique original. Friedrich Wilhelm Erdmannsdorff bought it for the king in Italy near Ostia in August 1790. It arrived in Potsdam in 1791, given a new head in 1792. The bust then graced the land bridge between the Heilige See and the Havel river, opposite the Marmorpalais until 1830. Moved to a museum, it received a replica of the “Strategist’s Head”. Sadly, after 1945, the bust disappeared. This replica, along with the “Strategist’s Head”, were erected in 1993 on the very spot where the original once stood. It is a reminder that even replicas can hold stories, echoing the journeys of their predecessors.
