Wow. Look at this stunning house. This is Georgia’s House. It’s not actually called Georgia’s House. It’s officially known as the George W Marston House. But everyone calls it Georgia’s House.
This magnificent building isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a time capsule a treasure chest of history and architectural brilliance. Built in 1905 it’s a prime example of the Arts and Crafts movement. The Marston family lived here. They were prominent figures in San Diego.
George Marston was a department store magnate a civic leader. He and his wife Anna raised their five children within these walls. Two of their children even got married here. The house was their family home for years. It’s over 8500 square feet. It’s surrounded by five acres of beautiful gardens.
Imagine the lively gatherings the family celebrations that once filled these rooms. The house is filled with original furniture. It includes pieces designed by Gustav Stickley and Charles Limbert. Renowned artists like Alfred Mitchell and Maurice Braun exhibited their work here. Their paintings are still on display.
The family lived on two floors plus an attic. The first floor features redwood-paneled rooms. A wide hallway leads to a built-in staircase bench. The living and dining rooms open onto a terrace overlooking the lawn. The house boasts six bedrooms a sleeping porch and four baths. This was the family’s home for years.
In 1987 the Marston family gifted the house to the city of San Diego. It became a museum. Save Our Heritage Organisation SOHO now maintains this historic landmark. SOHO also runs the museum shop located in the carriage house on the property.
The gardens are just as captivating. Initially designed by George Cooke they were later upgraded by Hale Walker. The gardens blend exotic and native plants. The Marstons even sought advice from Kate O Sessions a pioneer horticulturist. The garden features Canary Island Pines Eucalyptus trees and California Oaks. You can also find Mexican Cup of Gold vines and Queen Elizabeth roses. Many original plants survive. SOHO is diligently restoring other garden features.
