Did you know that beneath our feet lies a path connecting two industrial giants? This is the Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg. It whispers stories of steel and sweat. Let’s walk this path together. We will unearth the history of Dortmund’s iron heart.

The Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg is more than just a trail. It’s a link to Dortmund’s booming past. This 7.3-kilometer path retraces the old railway line. It once connected the Phoenix steelworks in Horder to the Westfalenhutte in Dortmund’s north. Imagine trains carrying molten iron. They traveled this route day and night.

The Regionalverband Ruhr or RVR is behind this project. They are transforming the old railway into a modern path. The Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg is for cyclists and pedestrians. It’s a crucial north-south connection. It boosts daily commuting and regional leisure.

So far, a 1.2-kilometer section is complete. It stretches from Phoenix-See to Max-Eyth-Strasse. This is only the beginning. More sections are planned. The entire route should be ready by 2026. Think about that first ride on the completed Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg.

Stefan Kuczera from RVR said it best. “With the Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg, we are creating a vital north-south connection.” He highlights its importance. It strengthens cycling and integrates into the Ruhr region’s leisure concept.

The path itself is well-designed. It is four meters wide. A 50-centimeter gravel bank borders each side. This ensures a safe and comfortable journey.

The Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg includes thoughtful design. The connections to Kohlensiepenstrasse and Max-Eyth-Strasse are level. This makes it accessible for all. The 100-meter ramp at Am Remberg overcomes a five-meter height difference. This ensures barrier-free access.

This project isn’t cheap. Planning and construction cost around 750,000 Euros. North Rhine-Westphalia covers 80 percent. This is part of the Regional Economic Promotion Program. The RVR funds the rest from its own resources.

You might hear other names for the Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg. Gartenstadtweg is one. HeiBer Hoeschianer was another idea. Ultimately, Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg won. It reflects the route’s historical purpose.

As you explore, remember the old railway. It passed between two slag heaps. These belonged to the Freie Vogel & Unverhofft mine. Today, these heaps are gone. The path connects to the Zechenbahn Schleswig trail. It also links to the Phoenixsee promenade.

The Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg offers a unique experience. It blends industrial history with modern recreation. It’s a reminder of Dortmund’s past. It’s a symbol of its ongoing transformation.

So, as you walk or cycle, imagine the past. Hear the trains. Feel the heat of the steel. The Hoesch-Hafenbahn-Weg is a journey through time. It’s a celebration of Dortmund’s industrial heritage. It’s a path to a greener future.
