In the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana, stands the Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church. It’s a place where faith echoes through the decades, a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. Its story began humbly in November 1961, in the home of Sister Annie Caldwell. Imagine a small gathering, filled with the fervor of faith, laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the community. Dr. James Thompson Reeder answered the call, becoming the church’s first senior pastor. Under his guidance, Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church flourished. The congregation grew, its finances strengthened, and its youth became active participants. This growth spurred a significant step: the purchase of their current location in August 1965. Dr. Reeder’s leadership spanned over two decades. He witnessed the transformation of a small gathering into a thriving church. After his retirement, Reverend Albert P. Curly briefly held the reins for a year. Then, in 1994, after a thoughtful search, Dr. Elliot Cuff became the third senior pastor of Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church. His tenure brought about remarkable changes. The Family Life Center of Mount Ararat was established, offering crucial services like economic development programs, after-school assistance, and computer training. With the support of his wife, Minister Virginia Evelyn Cuff, and dedicated volunteers, the Family Life Center provided invaluable resources to children in the inner city. These children might not have otherwise had access to such educational opportunities. In August 1996, Dr. Cuff spearheaded a renovation of the sanctuary, enhancing the building and creating a more welcoming space for worship. After a decade of dedicated service, Dr. Cuff moved on. Reverend Steven Eugene Carter, raised, licensed, and ordained within the Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church, was unanimously chosen as the fourth senior pastor. He took the helm in July 2004. Pastor Carter embraced the motto “Loving God, Loving People & Impacting the Community.” This philosophy resonated with the congregation. Membership surged, exceeding 1,500 new members under his leadership. New ministries were developed to address the evolving needs of the community. Additional services were added to accommodate the growing number of worshippers who gathered each Sunday. Pastor Carter also initiated “Renovation 24,” a two-year campaign to further renovate the church. The vision included an overflow room, screens for enhanced viewing, handicap access, educational classrooms, and a multi-purpose stage. These improvements aimed to create an even more welcoming and accessible environment for all. The Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and community. It’s a place where lives are changed and where the spirit of hope continues to thrive.
