Gargoyles guard secrets here at Barbelin / Lonergan Hall. This iconic structure at Saint Joseph’s University has stood since 1927. It is more than just a building. It is a symbol.

Barbelin Hall’s 165-foot tower was once Philadelphia’s highest point from sea level. The tower is a secondary logo for SJU.

Originally known as College Hall, it was renamed in 1960. The new name honored Father Felix J. Barbelin. He was the first president of Saint Joseph’s College. Barbelin served two separate terms.

The building’s architecture is Gothic revival. Wissahickon schist and limestone make up its facade. Look closely. You will see gargoyles and heads of early college presidents. Other limestone carvings adorn the building.

Barbelin Hall initially housed all types of classes. It also served as a residence hall. Now, the College of Arts & Sciences exclusively uses it. Barbelin Quad sits in the building’s center.

Notice the four limestone carvings on the Blocked Minor Tower. These represent a cultural transition. They symbolize modernization during the 20th century. One carving depicts Andy Gump. Another shows Pan playing the saxophone. A human face represents modern art’s evolution. Two students at a car wheel symbolize the Automotive Age.

Latin phrases are carved above archways. At the main entrance, find the inscription: “Dominus custodiat introitum tuum et exitum tuum.” It means “May the Lord watch over thine entering in and thy going forth.” A carving shows “The Mischievous Student” and “The Watchful Professor.”

The Courageous Lion guards the open center. It represents strength and courage. The Bat Gargoyle is the only true gargoyle. It diverts water from the building. Sculpted busts of past Jesuit presidents line the quad.

Barbelin Hall has served many purposes. It once housed science labs and a cafeteria. The John E. Lonergan School of Mechanics extended the hall in 1933. This provided more space for science programs.

In 2017, JJ White Inc. completed a full mechanical systems renovation. This included new radiators and air handling units. The systems were tied into the University’s Building Automation Systems. This ensured maximum efficiency.

The building stands as a defining feature of SJU. It represents the university’s identity. Barbelin Hall is not just bricks and mortar. It is a living piece of Saint Joseph’s University history.
