Agios Antonios Monastery is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of the Orthodox tradition. Originally built around the 14th century it has weathered storms both literal and figurative. It’s situated in a natural cavity on the south side of Pyxari rock near the church of Genesios of Theotokos.
Imagine the monks who first inhabited this isolated haven. They carved a life from the rock itself finding solace in prayer and contemplation. Their lives were simple yet profoundly spiritual. The monastery suffered a devastating fire in the 1970s. Tourists staying overnight accidentally started the blaze. The damage was significant but not enough to extinguish the flame of faith.
Father Fotios Karakostas a priest in Kastraki spearheaded the partial renovation. A new road improved access. The monastery now enjoys a new lease on life. It’s a testament to the community’s dedication.
The 17th-century portable icon of Saint Anthony once housed here now resides in the Holy Monastery of Agia Triada. It’s a reminder of the interconnectedness of these sacred spaces. Since 1994 Agios Antonios has been a Metochi a monastic dependency of the Holy Trinity Monastery.
Archimandrite Chrysostomos Tetsios the abbot of Agia Triada oversaw extensive restoration between 2005 and 2006. The cavernous nave dedicated to Agios Antonios on the third floor was renovated. So were the guest house and kitchen on the second floor. Two cells on the lower level were also restored.
Lazaros Pehlivanidis painted impressive frescoes on canvas to decorate the small domed church. The monastery reopened on January 17 2006. This was Saint Anthony’s feast day. It’s a place for quiet reflection for monks seeking seclusion. It remains a sanctuary for the fathers of the Holy Monastery of Agia Triada. A visit to Agios Antonios is a journey through time.
