Splash The oldest open-air swimming pool in Germany welcomes you. This is Lorettobad. Lorettobad also known as Lollo sits at the foot of the Lorettoberg in Freiburg’s Wiehre district. Established in 1841 by Johann Nepomuk Stadler it was Freiburg’s first public swimming baths.
Initially a men-only establishment Lorettobad later added a women’s section in 1886. This made it unique. It remains the only pool in Germany with a separate women’s area. This women-only section is completely enclosed by walls hedges and changing rooms. It’s a secluded haven for women.
The water initially came directly from the Hölderle stream. This stream still flows through the Lorettobad grounds. The cold water was heated in a separate pool. Later a deep well was drilled to resolve water disputes.
Following Stadler’s death his son-in-law Oskar Heim managed Lorettobad. The city of Freiburg eventually purchased it. It was even used as a cold storage facility during winter. During World War I the Reichswehr took control. The pool was closed to the public. In 1920 the local swimming club leased it.
In 1940 after much public debate the men’s area was converted into a family pool. The women’s pool however remained separate. The Nazi era saw the pool used by a Hitler Youth group. After the war the military government confiscated it. It reopened to the public in 1952.
In 1999 the ladies’ pool was renovated leading to a significant increase in visitors. A unique feature is the 125-year-old individual cubicles. These can be rented for up to four months each season. The segregation of sexes is unique. A law student’s 1980 lawsuit failed. The court upheld the women’s only policy citing local regulations.
Since the 1970s women have been able to bathe topless. The only man usually allowed in the ladies’ area is the lifeguard. However occasional concerts open the women’s area to everyone. The Friends of the Lorettobad organize these events. Warning signs announce when men are present.
Today Lorettobad offers both a family pool and a women’s pool. The family pool boasts a 25-meter pool a children’s play area and a large meadow. There is also a water slide table-tennis tables and a giant chess game. The women’s pool is similar but smaller. It’s a peaceful retreat where women can relax and enjoy the water.
