A majestic dome pierces the Bucharest sky. This is the Biserica Ortodoxa Sfanta Vineri Noua. Its story is one of resilience and faith. Built in 1854 by the merchant Nicolae Eftimiu it stood proudly. It was initially dedicated to Saint Paraskeva Saint Haralambie and Saint Nicholas.
The Biserica Ortodoxa Sfanta Vineri Noua wasn’t always here. Its first location was on Targoviste Street now Grivitei Street. Sadly it was demolished in 1931 to expand the Gara de Nord railway station. A chapel replaced it briefly but was destroyed in the 1944 bombings.
Undeterred the community rebuilt. Using funds from the expropriation they purchased land on Nicolae Titulescu Boulevard. The cornerstone of the current Biserica Ortodoxa Sfanta Vineri Noua was laid in 1940. The architect Dimitrie Ionescu-Berechet designed this impressive structure. Its design draws inspiration from the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and the Neagoe Basarab monastery at Curtea de Arges.
The Biserica Ortodoxa Sfanta Vineri Noua is a sight to behold. Its monumental structure features a classic Muntenesc plan. It is a cruciform design with three apses. A prolonged pronaos extends the sanctuary. The absence of a narthex enhances the imposing main arcade. The imposing dome soars 42 meters. It is a breathtaking ascent towards heaven. The Pantocrator shines within its light.
The interior is equally stunning. Over 1600 square meters of frescoes adorn the walls. More than 2200 figures populate the artwork. They include the Holy Trinity the Virgin Mary angels and saints. The paintings were restored in 1987 after sustaining 70% damage. A Venetian mosaic of Saint Paraskeva graces the facade.
