Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley a first cousin of President Franklin D Roosevelt’s father had a dream. He wanted to bring Catholic higher education to Newark. He named his creation after his aunt Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton the first American-born Catholic saint. Seton Hall started small only five students. But it quickly grew. It wasn’t always easy. Fires ravaged the campus multiple times in the 19th century. Yet Seton Hall persevered. It faced financial struggles and even the Civil War. Still it expanded its reach. The university’s history is filled with fascinating details. James F Kelley became the nation’s youngest college president in 1936 at just 33 years old. He led Seton Hall through a period of immense growth. The university became fully coeducational in 1968 a significant milestone. Seton Hall has always been a pioneer. In 1954 it established New Jersey’s first medical and dental school. The school initially thrived but financial difficulties forced its sale to the state in 1965.
