Saiun-in Temple. A name whispered on the winds of Kyoto. A place shrouded in mystery, where history and faith intertwine. Saiun-in Temple, also known as Shiunseki, isn’t easily found in guidebooks. Its origins remain unclear, adding to its mystique. Some believe it was established in 1665. Saiun-in is a sub-temple of Konkaikomyo-ji Temple, the head temple of the Jodo Sect, also known as Kurodani-san. Here at Saiun-in, a unique connection to a celestial figure takes center stage: the star-gazing Kṣitigarbha statue. Legend says this statue was erected by Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, to fulfill the prayers of a woman longing for a child. This woman, Ato, was the mother of Kukai. She prayed to the stars for a child, and her prayers were answered with the birth of Kukai. The current statue is believed to date back to the Edo period. It serves as a poignant reminder of a mother’s love and the power of prayer. Saiun-in Temple holds a somber yet significant role. It serves as a memorial for 352 retainers of the Aizu Domain. Every June, the head of the Aizu-Matsudaira family is invited to a memorial service held within the temple grounds. While not always open to the public, the temple’s serene atmosphere and unique history offer a quiet respite from Kyoto’s bustling streets. The temple grounds are also known for their seasonal beauty, with peonies blooming in spring, lotuses and crape myrtles in summer, and vibrant red leaves in autumn. Saiun-in Temple offers a glimpse into a lesser-known side of Kyoto, where whispers of history and faith mingle with the fragrance of seasonal blooms.
