Does the name Albairate ring a bell? It should. Albairate is a charming comune located just southwest of Milan. We are about to explore its history.

Albairate’s story stretches back to the Bronze Age. Imagine Ligurians settling here. Fast forward to 1054. Albairate appears in documents. It was then a fief of the Milanese monastery of San Vittore. Noble Milanese families also held property here. By the 13th century Albairate became a rural comune. Later it fell under the rule of the Visconti and Sforza families.

In 1570 Cardinal Carlo Borromeo visited Albairate. His visit sparked a spiritual renewal. It also boosted the social development of the town. Albairate then became part of the Duchy of Milan. Later it was part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. Finally it joined the Kingdom of Italy.

Albairate today is a vibrant municipality. It has a population of over 4700. It is a great place to discover Milan’s history.

Let’s delve into some of Albairate’s treasures. Have you heard of the Museo Agricolo Angelo Masperi? It is located in Cascina Salcano. Inside you will find antique carts tools and tractors. The museum also features a casera. This is a building for processing milk.

Don’t miss the ghiacciaia. It is one of the last remaining ice houses in the countryside. These structures were partially underground. Natural ice collected in winter kept food cool in summer.

Cascina Salcano itself is a sight to behold. This 18th-century building now houses the City Hall. It also houses the agricultural museum. The ice house is at the back of the courtyard. It is a testament to the area’s dairy farming past.

Albairate also boasts religious landmarks. The Church of San Giorgio is beautiful. The Oratorio di San Bernardo dates back to 1641. Some attribute it to Francesco Maria Richini. He was a prominent 17th-century Lombard architect.

Another interesting site is Cascina Due Mulini. It is a complex of two historic mills. These mills date back to the early 1700s. The Mulino Ranzani and Mulino Chiodini stand separated by the Visconti canal. Five water wheels power these mills. Two are wooden and three are iron. Mulino Ranzani retains two millstones and the granary. Mulino Chiodini has rice husking machinery. Both mills generated electric power.

Finally we have Cascina Rosio. Here stands Palazzo Albani. It dates back to the 16th century. Admire its structure and frescoes.

Albairate is part of the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. This agricultural park preserves the area’s rural character. As you explore Albairate take a moment to appreciate its blend of history and nature. From ancient settlements to rural traditions Albairate offers a glimpse into Lombardy’s rich heritage. Albairate is a piece of Italy’s fascinating story.
