Over one hundred years of community impact began with a group of women. This group met in January 1920. They gathered at a shop on Beach 116th Street. These women sought to form a sisterhood. Their initial meeting blossomed. It led to a storefront. There, they conducted High Holy Day services for the Jewish faith. About 100 people comprised its early membership. From these roots, an official temple emerged in 1921. This was the start of Temple Beth-El.
Today, Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park stands as a testament to enduring faith. It is a vibrant community. The synagogue is located at 445 Beach 135th Street. However, the original Temple Beth-El building stood at 121-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Maurice Courland designed it. It opened in 1921.
Temple Beth-El is a Conservative synagogue. It holds a vivid history. It has seen many changes. Rabbi Allan Blaine led the congregation for many years. Before him, Rabbi Robert Gordis served from 1931 to 1968. Rabbi Matt Carl is one of the few permanent rabbis Temple Beth-El has had. He recognizes the importance of the older members. They provide a sense of family.
Temple Beth-El has hosted countless life cycle events. These include Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and weddings. It also includes memorials. The temple has deeply impacted many families.
In 2020, Temple Beth-El celebrated its 100th anniversary. The congregation rededicated the windows in their sanctuary. These windows honored past members. They also recognized those who greatly impacted the community. A 100th Anniversary Celebration Brunch was held. It served as a fundraiser for the temple.
Though membership has changed over the years, Temple Beth-El remains strong. It continues to form a Jewish community in the Rockaways. Temple Beth-El is open to further growth. It sees itself as a historical leader. It serves members from Rockaway, Belle Harbor, and Neponsit. The community comes together. They celebrate their history and faith at Temple Beth-El.
