The original I N Koimiseos Theotokou a smaller basilica was built in 1705. It stood as a beacon of hope during the Ottoman rule. Tragically it was destroyed in 1826 during the siege of the Acropolis. Yet from the ashes a new church rose.
In 1832 the rebuilding began. It quickly became clear that the new structure wasn’t large enough for the growing congregation. So in 1846 a grander vision took shape. The community rallied together raising funds to build the magnificent church we see today.
The architect Dimitrios Zezos a visionary of his time designed the I N Koimiseos Theotokou. He introduced the innovative Greek-Byzantine architectural style. A style that harmoniously blends ancient Greek and Byzantine elements. Sadly Zezos died before construction started.
Two other talented architects Panagis Kalkos and Ernst Ziller oversaw the building process. Ziller is thought to have designed the beautiful icon screen. Dimitrios Soutsos then mayor of Athens designed the dome. The entire project took nearly thirty years to complete. Finally it was finished in 1892.
The I N Koimiseos Theotokou is a three-aisled basilica. Elaborate octagonal steeples grace its narthex. The intricate cloisonne masonry and double-light windows are stunning. Marble decorations and antefixes add to its beauty. The interior’s decoration completed in 1892 is the work of renowned artists.
The church’s name Panagia Chrysospiliotissa means Virgin Mary Chrysospiliotissa. This refers to a copy of an icon from the Monastery of Mega Spileo. This icon now resides within the I N Koimiseos Theotokou. The church celebrates its patron saint on August 15th.
