Lincoln Center isn’t just a collection of buildings. It’s a cultural powerhouse a vibrant hub where the world’s finest artists converge. This 16 3-acre complex on Manhattan’s Upper West Side is home to internationally renowned organizations. The New York Philharmonic the Metropolitan Opera the New York City Ballet and the Juilliard School all call Lincoln Center home. Millions of visitors annually experience the magic within its walls.

The story of Lincoln Center began in the 1950s. Philanthropist John D Rockefeller III spearheaded the project. It was part of a larger urban renewal initiative. Renowned architects such as Max Abramovitz Wallace Harrison and Philip Johnson were commissioned to design the various buildings. The first three buildings opened between 1962 and 1966. These were David Geffen Hall originally Philharmonic Hall the David H Koch Theater formerly the New York State Theater and the Metropolitan Opera House.

But Lincoln Center’s history isn’t without mystery. The origin of its name remains a topic of debate. Was it named for President Abraham Lincoln or for its location in Lincoln Square a name bestowed in 1906 without clear documentation? The answer remains elusive despite much speculation.

Throughout the decades Lincoln Center has undergone continuous expansion and renovation. The addition of Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2004 expanded its musical repertoire. A campus-wide redevelopment project completed in 2012 modernized its facilities. The renovation of David Geffen Hall completed in 2022 transformed the concert hall.
