It was commissioned by a wealthy morgado, a lord of a manor, who desired a grand temple near his residence. The Igreja Paroquial da Foz do Sousa’s main facade, with its distinctive gable and adjoining bell tower, still echoes that ambition. The two-story tower, crowned with a cupola, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and architectural grandeur. The church is more than just a beautiful building. It is the heart of Foz do Sousa, the largest parish in the municipality of Gondomar. The parish itself sprawls across a vast area, nearly twenty square kilometers, stretching from the west to the east. The Igreja Paroquial da Foz do Sousa, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, serves as the main place of worship among its seven religious sites. These sites, scattered throughout Compostela, Esposade, Ferreirinha, Gens, Jancido, Sousa, and Zebreros, illustrate the deep-rooted religious fervor that permeates this region.
